Reasons for Divorce Rates to Spike Between the 5th to 10th Years of Marriage and Steps to Support Couples

Mr Vikram Nair asked the Minister for Social and Family Development in light of the findings in the Family Trends Report 2026 (a) what are the reasons for divorce rates to spike between the 5th to 10th years of marriage; (b) whether any steps can be taken to support couples in this phase of their marriage.

Answer

1. Marriages may break down for a range of reasons. Data suggest that marriages tend to face heightened vulnerability between the 5th and 10th year. Factors may include differing expectations about family life and parenting, fertility issues, and loss of emotional connection. Unresolved conflicts in the early years may surface and place further strain on the marital relationship.
2. The Government takes a holistic approach to strengthening marriages across life stages. This starts with upstream support to build a strong foundation that will last, such as through marriage preparation programmes before and within the early years. As the marriage evolves, there are marriage enrichment programmes to strengthen spousal relationships, and programmes to support parenthood.
3. Those facing marital stress at any point may make use of online resources through the Family Assist portal and professional marital and family counselling under the Strengthening Families Programme (FAM). The Government is committed to supporting families in building strong and resilient marriages. We encourage couples to invest time in building their marriages, and seek help early if challenges arise.
