Singapore Government

New large child care centres to increase child care places in high demand areas

New large child care centres to increase child care places in high demand areas

Government will build five large child care centres to help parents by providing accessible, affordable and quality child care services. ECDA-appointed Anchor Operators (AOPs) will manage these centres. The first centre will be completed by mid-2016.

The centres, each with a capacity of between 300 and 500 child care places, will be built on undeveloped state land in Jurong West, Punggol, Sengkang, Woodlands and Yishun (please refer to Annex A). These are areas with higher demand for child care due to the larger number of young families.

ECDA is expanding child care capacity significantly and these large child care centres are part of that effort. Going forward, every new HDB town will come with child care centres pre-built. ECDA will also build child care centres in alternative locations. These include centres in commercial buildings developed through the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s Community/Sports Facilities Scheme (CSFS), centres co-located with other community facilities, and centres above multi-storey carparks (see Annex B).

Minister for Social and Family Development, Mr Tan Chuan-Jin said, “We aim to support our parents’ child care needs. We have made good progress over the past two years in enhancing the accessibility, affordability and quality of early childhood services. These upcoming centres will further build on our ongoing efforts to better meet the needs of parents. MPs have been working closely with my Ministry on this effort, and their feedback has been most valuable. We will continue to work closely with our sector partners on the various initiatives to better help parents who require child care services.”

Registration for these centres will be open from early 2016 through ECDA’s online Registration Management System.
