Clarifications on photo of elderly cleaner at Clementi hawker centre

Type: Fact Check

Topic(s): Financial Assistance & Social Support

Hi everyone, you may have come across an old photo of an elderly lady working at a Clementi hawker centre, which was first posted on 21st Nov 2017 and resurfaced on other sites on 14 Dec 2018.

The elderly lady is known to local grassroots and community groups, including Fei Yue Senior Activity Centre and Willing Hearts. Our SSO colleagues have reached out to her to find out if she needed assistance, but she declined as she shared that she preferred to be independent.

The elderly lady is currently working at a coffee shop at Bukit Batok, and receives Workfare Income Supplement payouts every month. She is living with her daughter who is also working.

She receives healthcare benefits under the Pioneer Generation Package, and Silver Generation Ambassadors visit her on a quarterly basis to check on her well-being. She is a member of Fei Yue Senior Activity Centre (Rental) and frequents the Centre daily. She receives food distributed by Willing Hearts, as well as food and grocery vouchers from the Grassroots every month.

We have encouraged her to approach the SSO or our community partners should she require any additional support, and we will continue to look out for her.

Building an inclusive and a caring society is a collective effort. If you come across individuals or families who require support, please reach out to us at our ComCare hotline at 1800-222-0000 or approach the nearest SSO (www.msf.gov.sg/ssolocator) or Family Service Centre (www.msf.gov.sg/fsclocator).
