Determination of Birth Order in Baby Bonus Scheme

Determination of Birth Order in Baby Bonus Scheme

Published On
31 Dec 2012

We refer to the letter “Tailor Baby Bonus Scheme to Help Remarried Couples” from Mr Mike Pang on 24 Dec 12.

The Baby Bonus scheme helps families with the cost of raising children. The birth order of a child is tagged to the natural mother so as to incentivise married women to give birth to more children. As the birth order of children borne by their natural mother remains unchanged, this approach also avoids possible fluctuations or claw back of benefits already given out compared to other approaches where the birth order may have to be re-determined. Mr Pang’s first born by his current wife is still eligible for the cash gift and co-matching contribution provided by the government under the Baby Bonus scheme. In addition, he and his wife can enjoy other marriage and parenthood benefits such as leave schemes, tax incentives and childcare subsidies
