For the first time, the Registry of Marriages (ROM) is celebrating Valentine’s Day in a special way this year to mark the 20th anniversary of the International Year of the Family. 14 February 2014 also coincides with the 15th day of the Lunar New Year, more commonly known as Yuan Xiao (元宵) or the Chinese Valentine’s Day.
The ROM premises will be specially decorated to allow couples and guests to soak in a romantic and celebratory atmosphere. Couples getting married on 14 February 2014 will receive a set of limited edition decorative display of a pair of mandarin ducks that symbolises wedded bliss and fidelity. There will also be fun activities for couples and guests of all ages to participate in, including on-site song dedications, making of Valentine’s Day cards, as well as free ice cream and popcorn. Class 95 FM deejay Yasminne Cheng will also be present from 10am to 12noon to facilitate the live song dedications. Couples and families who share their photos on the FamilyMatters! Facebook page on that day will also stand a chance to win $50 CapitaVouchers. Please refer to Annex for more details on the event programme and contest.
Registrar of Marriages Ms Cynthia Chan shared that ROM received 245 applications for solemnisation on 14 February 2014, compared to about 35 to 50 applications on an average weekday. “ROM is happy to celebrate Valentine’s Day with the couples who chose to get married on 14 February 2014. Couples select such popular and auspicious dates for their wedding as they believe it symbolises a good start to their marriage. As Valentine’s Day this year is doubly special, we hope that the couples will have a memorable day at ROM and also be reminded that marriage is a lifelong journey together and it takes love, respect and commitment to keep the marriage alive.”
