Childcare and Student Care Centres to Suspend General Services Until 1 June 2020; Kindergarten School Holidays to Begin 5 May 2020

Type: Press Releases

Topic(s): Children & Families, Disability Services

1 On 21 April 2020, the Multi-Ministry Taskforce announced an extension of circuit breaker measures to 1 June 2020. In tandem, the suspension of general services by preschools, student care centres, special student care centres, and early intervention (EI) centres will also be extended to 1 June 2020.

2 The Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) and Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA) will continue to work closely with these centres to safeguard the well-being of all children and staff.

Childcare Centre Operators, Student Care Centres and Early Intervention Centres to Extend Suspension of General Services

3 During the extended circuit breaker period, childcare centres will continue to remain open only to serve a limited group of parents who are working in essential services like healthcare and who are unable to find alternative care arrangements. All student care centres, including special student care centres, will continue to suspend services. EI centres will continue to support their children remotely, and provide in-person intervention only for selected children with higher needs.

Kindergarten Operators to Commence School Holidays from 5 May

4 In line with MOE’s updated academic calendar, kindergartens will commence school holidays from 5 May 2020 to 1 June 2020, and will be closed during this period. Kindergartens will re-open for Term 3 from 2 June 2020 to 6 September 2020. Within Term 3, there will be a mid-term break from 20 July 2020 to 26 July 2020.

Support for Families

5 Parents are strongly encouraged to continue to keep their children at home during this period. Parents who require assistance may approach their children’s childcare centre and school directly.

6 Home-based learning resources developed by various preschools will continue to be shared with all other preschools and parents.

- Visit go.gov.sg/preschoolhbl for resources from the Ministry of Education and the five anchor operators – NTUC First Campus, MYWorld Preschool, E-Bridge Preschool, Skool4Kidz Preschool, PCF Sparkletots.

- Families for Life has an #AskFFL series on Facebook with programmes and activities for children and parents.

- Home-based learning activities are also available at kidzmatters.com or via the Kidzmatters mobile app. These home-based learning ideas were put together by NTUC First Campus, in partnership with ECDA, anchor operators and MOE Kindergarten.

7 Preschools will also continue to engage their children during the extended circuit breaker period to check on their general well-being and progress.

8 The ongoing COVID-19 situation requires our collective efforts to overcome the challenges ahead. MSF and ECDA continue to stand with the preschool, student care and EI community and families in these difficult times. We would like to thank our operators, teachers and staff for their dedication and hard work, and the understanding and support of parents and caregivers during this extraordinary period.
