The Commissioner helps parents who are unable to support themselves get support from their children through mediation, counselling, etc.
What We Do
The Commissioner for the Maintenance of Parents helps parents who are unable to support their basic needs due to old age or illness get support from their children who are capable of supporting them, but are not doing so.
How the Commissioner can help:
1. Provide Mediation Assistance
The Commissioner helps parents organise mediation sessions with their children with the aim of helping them reach an agreement on the level/amount of “maintenance” or support to be given to parents, without having to pursue legal channels.
2. Refer Families to Community Resources
The Commissioner also informs and assists parents in exploring other non-legal options such as community resources, which can provide further mediation, counselling and other family services.
3. Represent Eligible Parents in Lodging a Claim at the Tribunal for the Maintenance of Parents
In the event parties cannot reach an agreement through non-adversarial means, the Commissioner will represent parents who are eligible in lodging a claim at the Tribunal.
The Commissioner for the Maintenance of Parents is appointed under the Maintenance of Parents Act (Cap 167B).
