The Tribunal for the Maintenance of Parents

The Tribunal for the Maintenance of Parents offers a legal option for aged parents, who are not able to support themselves, to seek maintenance from children who are capable but unwilling to support them.

Parents can file for a Maintenance Order against their children at the Tribunal, which serves as a court that grants or dismisses the parent's claim.

The Tribunal for the Maintenance of Parents was established in 1996 under the Maintenance of Parents Act (Chapter 167B) to hear and determine all applications for maintenance made under the Act.

Its President, 3 Deputy Presidents and 11 members are appointed by the Minister of Social and Family Development. At least 3 members, including the President or a Deputy President, must conduct each hearing.
